South Carolina drivers paid the least amount for gas for the second consecutive year in the U.S., according to research complied by AAA Carolinas.

South Carolina gas prices averaged $3.24 per gallon in 2013, which is the state's lowest average since 2010.

The average amount per gallon is also 11 cents cheaper than 2012's average, and 7 cents cheaper than 2011's, according to AAA.

Average gas prices in South Carolina last year were $2.60.

"Increased refinery capacity, more fuel-efficient vehicles and higher production of North American crude oil helped push prices lower in 2013," said David E. Parsons, president and CEO of AAA Carolinas, in a statement. "We expect these trends to continue into 2014."

The national average for 2013 was $3.49, a decrease of 11 cents compared to 2012. The average last year was $3.60.

California recorded the highest average gas prices in the U.S., as drivers spent $3.88 per gallon last year, according to AAA Carolinas.

Analyst have already predicted that average gas prices will decline slightly in 2014, but declined to provide an estimate yet.

As of January 3, the current national average is $3.31, according to GasBuddy.com.
