Honda is recalling 344,187 2007-'08 Honda Odyssey minivans because the Vehicle Safety Assist System may apply the brakes unexpectedly.

"Due to a combination of system components and software, the Vehicle Safety Assist System (VSA) may apply the brakes unexpectedly," said the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in its summary. "The vehicle may suddenly and unexpectedly brake hard, and without illuminating the brake lights, increasing the risk of a crash from behind."

No crashes or injuries have occurred because of the issue, according to Honda.

Affected vehicles were built from August 8, 2006 through September 8, 2008.

Honda told federal safety regulators it has received 109 warranty claims and 205 field reports related to the recall as of June 30, 2013, according to the NHTSA.

The minivans were the subject of a federal safety probe that began on June 25, 2013. NHTSA received 22 complaints alleging incidents of unexpected braking in 2007-'08 Odyssey minivans.

Five complaints claim that their local dealer found a trouble code indicating a problem with the steering-angle sensor, according to the NHTSA.

Ten additional complaints reported that the dealer was unable to find a trouble code or figure out what the problem was.

The recall won't begin until March 2014, due to a shortage of parts. Dealers will then install updated yaw sensors to fix the issue in the VSA software.

Honda says it is planning on sending owners of the Odyssey minivans a letter telling them how to handle the issue.

A second notification letter will be sent once the parts become available, according to the NHTSA.
