Plane Lands at Wrong Airport, Winds up At Jabara Instead of The McConnel Air Force Base

A large Boeing 747 Dreamlifter plane landed at the wrong airport on Nov. 20, according to CBS News.

The plane was supposed to fly to the McConnell Air Force Base from New York JFK Airport. It landed at Jabara Airport near Wichita instead.

"A Dreamlifter bound for McConnell Air Force Base in Wichita safely landed this evening at nearby Col. James Jabara Airport instead. We are working to determine next steps and will have additional information in the morning," Boeing said in a statement.

The plane departed the airport at approximately 1 p.m. today, Nov. 22,

There was an initial concern that the airport's 6,100-foot runway would be long enough for the cargo plane to take off from the airport. The 235-foot plane like usually used a runway of at least 9,000 feet long.

A reason for the mix up hasn't been confirmed yet, but it's believed that the pilots confused the two airports, according to air traffic control readings.

The Dreamlifter was permitted to land at McConnell AFB but instead landed about 9 miles north at Jabara around 9:20 p.m. on Nov. 21, according to Wichita's KWCH TV, who cited audio from LiveATC.net.

The pilots could be heard saying to a control tower in the audio: "Ahh, yes sir, we just landed at the other airport."

No one was injured and there was no damage done as a result of the incident.

The National Transportation Safety Board is currently busy collecting information about the 747's landing.
