"Ghostbusters" fans are hoping to save the Cadillac known as Ecto-1a.
A group has penned a petition to recover the 1959 Cadillac Miller-Meteor ambulance that appeared in "Ghostbusters II," Motor Authority reported.
The original Ecto-1 vehicle in the first "Ghostbusters" film was restored several years ago, according to the group's website. But the second model, which appeared in the sequel, was prepared for restoration right before funding for the project was cut.
The car has suffered in recent years, following its public display at Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida, according to Motor Authority. An Instagram photo on the fan website shows its current state of disrepair. The car has a smashed windshield, crumpled hood and numerous missing parts, while its light bar sits on the hood.
During its time in Orlando, the car was crashed into by a studio vehicle, before visitors climbed inside it and removed pieces as souvenirs.
Ecto-1a has been sitting in a Sony backlot for more than five years, and the Ghostbusters Fans collective wants to buy the car and restore it.
"[We] would like to ask Sony Pictures to sell us the 1959 Cadillac used for the Ecto-1a (along with all original 'Ecto' parts) at the current scrap value," the website says.
"With the car in our hands, we would then be able to give her the restoration to screen used quality that she deserves. We have started this campaign to garner names in support by those who would like to see the restoration occur."
The site is accepting donations toward the purchase and has garnered more than 2,000 signatures so far.
"Sign this petition if you would like to see the Ecto-1a restored, and let us know if you would be willing to donate to the project," the website says. "Let's show Sony Pictures how serious we are, and that we have what it would take to get it done!"
