GM Releases Updated 2014 Chevy Malibu With More Room, Improved Fuel Economy

The revamped 2014 Chevrolet Malibu will be arriving in General Motors showrooms soon, and the automaker is hoping the refreshed model will improve sales.

GM has said the Malibu will come with more space and an improved fuel economy, according to USA Today.

Interested customers can purchase the base Malibu LS for $22,965.

A new front fascia, more comfortable armrest, rear legroom, and improved center console have all been confirmed by GM. The base model's engine achieves 14 percent better city fuel economy.

The new Malibu is the first midsize vehicle sold in the U.S. to include start-stop technology on a base engine and the first to be equipped with Siri "Eyes Free" for drivers with iPhones.

GM was able to complete upgrades for the 2014 model in about 18 months, which is considered a very quick turnaround.

"We recognize we need to be our best to grow our brand, grow our share," said Chris Perry, vice president for Chevrolet marketing, in a statement. "That's the point of the new Malibu. We had a great product but we needed to make it better."

A new marketing campaign has been launched by the automaker this week, including TV commercials. The campaign will run for at least six months, according to Perry.

Approximately 154,950 Malibus have been sold since September, a 13.7 decline compared to the same time last year, according to USA Today.

Sales numbers for the Malibu are even worse when considering how its top competitors have done. Approximately 319,000 Toyota Camrys, 282,000 Honda Accords have been sold during the same time, respectively.

The MalibuEco model which featured eAssist technology has been dropped by the automaker. The Malibu is now offered with two engines: a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, and a 2-liter turbo, which features a new turbo badge.

The 2014 Malibu with a base engine gets 25 mpg in city driving, up 3 mpg over the 2013 version, and 36 mpg highway, up 2 mpg from 2013.

The vehicle's grille and overall interior has also been updated, according to GM.
