As the government shutdown continues, first lady Michelle Obama has been forced to cancel plans for her appearance at a $32,000-a-head political fundraiser scheduled for Friday in Los Angeles, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The first lady was slated to be the headliner at the Democratic National Committee fundraiser, which was set to be held at the Hancock Park home of "Everybody Loves Raymond" creator Philip Rosenthal and his actress wife, Monica.
The DNC fundraiser event would have featured the first lady discussing current issues in an informal setting with a small group of donors. She has also been forced to cancel plans to join House minority leader Nancy Pelosi for a "Woman's Brunch" fundraiser at the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco.
With tickets ranging from $500 to $32,000 each, proceeds from that event would have gone to the Democrats' efforts to recapture the House, where they need to pick up 17 seats to reclaim their majority, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Recent political emergencies have curtailed more than one trip for the first family. President Barack Obama was set to lead a similar event on Sept. 9 for A-list donors at the Hancock Park mansion of "Friends" co-creator Marta Kauffman and her husband, composer Michael Skloff.
The Syrian crisis forced that event to be canceled, and it was announced the first lady, who has her own substantial Hollywood following, would make a fundraising trip instead.
As the impasse with the GOP-controlled house continues, the first family will not even travel by private means.
The government shutdown is now in its 10th day as the GOP fights to use the budget resolution to defund the Affordable Health Care Act, President Obama's signature legislation.
