130 Car UK Pileup Update: Sheppey Bridge Reopened After Being Closed For Nine Hours (VIDEO)

The Sheppey Bridge has reopened in the U.K. after an 130 car pileup closed the bridge for over nine hours.

The pileup took place at around 7:15 a.m., according to BBC News.

"All I could hear was the cars smashing in front of each other and I could not know how far ahead the accident was," said Jamie Emmett, a driver involved in the pileup.

Five people had to be pried out from their crushed vehicles according to local firefighters in what has been called the worst incident Kent, England has seen in years.

For a solid 10 minutes, car smashed into one another according to BBC News.

"For 10 minutes afterwards, all we could hear was screeching, cars thudding into each other, lorries crashing," said driver Martin Stammers, who described the scene as horrendous.

Over sixty people were seriously injured in the crash, 35 of which needed to be taken to the hospital.

The road was poorly lit during a thick fog, which is what local police believe caused the massive pileup. They've yet to officially say that the fog was the reason for the pileup as of press time.

"It was very hazardous. It was described to me as a very thick fog and it was certainly low visibility at the time," said Inspector Andy Reeves, according to BBC News.

Vehicles are allowed to drive up to 70 mph on the bridge, though many drivers were seen not using their lights.
