Mercedes-Benz unveiled its new S 500 Plug-in Hybrid this week ahead of its official debut at the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show.
The automaker said the new vehicle will return 78 mph according to a company press release.
Christian Bokich, a Mercedes-Benz USA spokesman said the S 500 Plug-in will arrive in the U.S. the fall of 2014.
An official base price has not been revealed, but the company is aiming to have the 500 go up against the 2014 Porsche Panamera S E-Hybrid, which is sold for $99,975.
Expect the S 500 hybrid to travel 19 miles on electric power alone according to the press release. The vehicle can be charged from an external source with a charging socket found near the right side of the rear bumper.
This will be the third S hybrid option, as the 500 will follow the S 400 and S 300 BlueTech Hybrid.
"The S 500 Plug-in Hybrid is equipped with a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine, electric motor and a new high-voltage lithium-ion battery," said Edmunds about the new S 500. "The V6 engine delivers 329 horsepower, while the electric motor has an output of 107 horsepower.
The new mode will be capable of going 0-62 in just 5.5 seconds, and has a top speed of 155 mph.
The EPA has not announced official fuel economy estimates for the S 500 hybrid.
