Toyota Hybrid-R Concept Due at Frankfurt Auto Show (VIDEO)

Toyota has revealed its new Hybrid R-Concept car will debut at the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show.

Despite the announcement, the automaker failed to provide further information about the new vehicle according to Edmunds.

"Toyota will showcase an exciting new concept for road and track, featuring Toyota Hybrid System-Racing (THS-R) technology," the automaker said in a press statement.

As Toyota fans known, the THS-R technology was used in the TS030, the automaker's FIA World Endurance Championship vehicle.

BMW and Toyota recently revealed plans to make a joint sports-vehicle earlier this year, which is expected to be finished by the end of 2013.

The two companies also are expected to work on a new fuel cell vehicle system, which reportedly would include a hydrogen tank and motor. The companies expect to release the hydrogen tank motor by 2020.

"In order for FCVs (fuel cell vehicles) to become more widely used, it needs to be cheaper. That would require a great deal of time and cost for development," said Toyota Vice Chairman Takeshi Uchiyamada, who led development of the bestselling Prius hybrid in the late 1990s to Reuters.

Toyota uses lithium-ion batteries in its Prius plug-in hybrid currently, and also in select Prius v models.

The auto show runs from Sept. 10 - 22.
