Norway Tunnel Fire: 55 People Hospitalized Due to Smoke Inhalation

A semi-trailer truck caught fire in Norway's second-biggest tunnel earlier today, Aug. 5, causing 160 people to evacuate.

Approximately 55 people were hospitalized due to smoke inhalation and other injuries according to the Associated Press.

The truck caught fire 2.17 miles into the tunnel in a district east of Bergen, said police spokesman Jorn Lasse Refnes. The lights went out in the tunnel shortly after the fire started, which led to a number of car crashes.

"Fifty-five people have been taken to hospital for checks," police spokesman Joern Lasse Refsnes said according to Reuters.

The Gudvangatunnelen is 7.08 miles long and can be found in the western part of Norway.

The truck driver was not injured during the incident according to the Associated Press.

Police have not confirmed what caused the fire as of press time, though it has been extinguished.

Though most of the people who were injured are suffering from smoke inhalation, some are dealing with "light" injuries after they crashed their cars due to the lights going out in the tunnel.

"The traffic up the hill went slower and slower. Finally it stopped completely. A man then jumped out of a lorry with some blue lights in his hands and stopped the traffic. He said that a lorry was on fire," said Monika Blikas, an eyewitness who was driving behind the trailer, said according to NRK.
