Tesla vs. BMW: Model S and i3 Are Destined For an EV Showdown

Currently Tesla Motors has no major competition in the electric luxury car market, but that will change by 2014 as BMW is preparing to introduce the all-electric i3.

BMW has already started a global launch of the i3, which will reach the U.S. by 2014 according to CNN.

So far reviews for the new model have been through the roof meaning Tesla and company CEO Elon Musk might have something to worry about.

So how do the two car companies and their vehicles compare?

Tesla currently produces 400 Model S vehicles a week at its Fremont, C.A., and the luxury car can be purchased for a base price of $62,400.

Tesla expects to sell around 21,000 vehicles this year according to CNN.

BMW meanwhile will have the capability of making 40,000 i3s and pricing will start at approximately $43,000.

They've yet to release an approximate number of vehicle's they expect to sell in 2014.

Tesla claims the Model S has an estimated range at 300 miles going 55 mph, and an EPA 5-Cycle Certified Range of 265 miles for the 85 kWh version.

The i3 is capable of going 80 to 100 miles on a single charge according to BMW.

The Model S can seat 7 people where as the i3 seats four passengers according to CNN.

Tesla also has the advantage over BMW regarding charging stations. This spring the company outlined a plan that included the introduction of over 100 charging stations in North America by 2015.

Tesla does not currently sell its vehicles through a dealer, though many states are trying to change that. BMW operates by using over 339 independent dealers, so it all depends on if you like dealing with a dealership or not.
