Lake Powell Accident: 1 Woman Dead, 2 Missing After Boat Crash

A Utah man who was driving his boat on Lake Powell with 13 passengers aboard became "distracted" before he hit a houseboat and flipped his vessel according to local police.

A 57-year-old woman was killed during the crash, while two other women, ages 22 and 29, are still missing in the water after the accident on the morning of June 20 near Dangling Rope Marina in southern Utah according to the Associated Press.

Diving crews planned to "continue searching" today, June 21, for the missing women, whose names haven't been released to the public as of press time.

Police confirmed that most of the passengers aboard the boat were family members of the driver from northern Utah. Nobody on the houseboat was injured according to the Associated Press.

Lake Powell is a popular house boating destination and it is "not uncommon" for boaters to go out early in the morning to experience the lake's "smooth waters" according to Kane County sheriff's Sgt. Alan Alldredge.

The distracted driver tried to swerve when he noticed the moving houseboat but failed to do so in time and hit the front corner, causing the boat to overturn.

Police said that all six of the children aboard were wearing life jackets.

The motorboat driver and an 11-year-old girl had to be airlifted to a nearby hospital in Flagstaff, Ariz., while a third person was taken to the hospital by ambulance according to the Associated Press.

After the crash, a National Park Service dive team worked most of day searching for the missing passengers. Water in the area is approximately 400 feet deep at the crash site according to Alldredge.
