Kansas City teens have developed a car that runs simply by using social media sites like Facebook and Twitter.

The high school students will be driving from Kansas City to Washington D.C.next week in the innovative vehicle according to KCTV.

"We're just a bunch of high school students from Kansas City, MO," Kelvin Duley, a Minddrive student mentor, said according to KCTV.

The vehicle was originally a beat-up 1967 Volkswagen Karmann Gia, but the car has since been rebuilt into a fully functional EV.

Every tweet, Instagram share or Facebook like is routed into a server connected to the electric engine according to KCTV. If the car doesn't get enough social media "fuel" then a little black box cuts power to the electric engine.

"Social media being used to power a car that they built is just so perfect," said Linda Buchner, president of the Minddrive program according to KCTV. "It's designed so that when we stop for charging, if we don't have enough social fuel the car won't start again. But it's not going to leave us stranded on the side of the highway with a bunch of teenagers."

Minddrive began as an after school program where teens could work on cars at just one high school, but the program has since spread out to a number of other inner-city schools.

The teens involved in the program have achieved success following their motto "learning from experience."

The students won't just be driving to Washington for a joy ride however, they'll be going on what they call "The Social Fuel Tour" where they will make their case with lawmakers for "more hands-on education" like they received while building the car.

The tour will make stops at a number of different cities like Springfield, IL, Indianapolis, IN, Akron, OH, and Pittsburgh, PA before arriving at Washington.

Twenty students will be making the trip which includes stops at technology centers, college campuses, and environmental projects according to KCTV. The trip begins June 1.
