A truck carrying an oversize load hit a bridge on the major thoroughfare between Seattle and Canada, sending a section of the span and two vehicles into the Skagit River.
All three passengers suffered minor injuries but will be okay according to the Associated Press.
The incident took place at approximately 7 p.m. on May 23 on the four-lane I-5 bridge near Mount Vernon, which is located 60 miles north of Seattle.
"For reasons unknown at this point in time, the semi struck the overhead of the bridge causing the collapse," said Washington State Patrol Chief John Batiste.
Batiste added that it wasn't clear if the bridge just simply gave way on its own originally, but later during a news conference he said the tractor-trailer carrying a tall load hit the upper part of the span.
The truck was able to get off the bridge and the driver remained at the scene to cooperate with investigators according to local police.
"The I-5 corridor is totally disrupted," said Washington Gov. Jay Inslee, who went to the scene Thursday night. "Thanks to the rescuers and a little bit of luck, we had three Skagitonians who made it out of the Skagit River alive."
Both lanes were shut down temporarily in both directions according to the Associated Press. Delays are still expected as of press time.
Detours have been set up for people who use the bridge for their daily commute, but Batiste "urged" drivers to avoid the area if possible especially during the Memorial Day weekend.
The bridge is used by approximately 71,000 vehicles per day according to Batiste.
