Five people died in a botched bank robbery in southern Israel which ended when a robber shot himself according to local police.

"The woman hostage walked out of the bank after the robber shot and killed himself. She was taken for medical treatment" in a hospital in Beersheba, the Negev city where the robbery took place, police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said to AFP.

Four other people were killed besides the robber at the Bank Hapoalim in the southern city of Beersheba. Three other individuals were injured, although police have determined at this point the incident is "over."

The suicide took place after a special anti-terror unit was able to break into the bank police said. The area is still cordoned off according to the Daily Mail.

Former Israel police commissioner Assaf Hefetz said to Army Radio this was the "most violent and fatal bank robbery" he could remember ever occurring in Israel.

He added he couldn't remember a bank robbery ever ending with four casualties.

Multiple witnesses reported gunfire and a nearby school went into lockdown until the situation ended. During the standoff, police were able to apprehend one of the robbers, but the other remained inside the bank with one hostage according to the Daily Mail.

At least one of the individuals injured by the robber is in critical condition from an upper-body wound and two are suffering from "shock."

No other information has been released as of press time.
