The Obama administration will reportedly help federal agencies purchase approximately 10,000 hybrid vehicles in an effort reduce fuel use in the U.S. according to the government's General Services Agency.
Obama previously stated earlier this year that he's administration has a strict goal of putting 1 million plug-in electric vehicles on U.S. roads by 2015. While this plan seems like a long-shot for now, it seems he's willing to do his part at least.
The 10,000 hybrid models will be added to the approximate 200,000 cars and trucks the GSA currently owns.
"Providing a hybrid federal fleet is an essential part of the GSA's commitment to making government agencies as efficient and effective as possible," said GSA acting Administrator Dan Tangherlini according to the Detroit Free Press.
Each hybrid saves at least 100 gallons of gas of fuel per year on average according to the GSA. If they reach their goal, the government is expected to save approximately 1 million gallons of fuel every year that the new models are used.
Back in 2011, Obama stated that full-size sedans or SUVs would no longer be allowed unless it is "absolutely necessary."
"At a time when government needs to make every tax dollar count, GSA is committed to creating more energy efficiency and cost-saving opportunities like the fleet consolidation program that make government smarter and reduce our environmental footprint," said Tangherlini.
The GSA currently has 10,700 hybrids, which is only five percent of all models. They purchased 919 models last year according to Green Car Reports.
The Obama administration is encouraging agencies to consider the hybrid models, but won't force these models on the many different U.S. agencies that lease models from the GSA.
"This is a simply a good business decision that will benefit not only our bottom line, but reduce our carbon emissions as well," said Interior Secretary Sally Jewell according to the Detroit Free Press.
