Boston Marathon 2013 Update: 2 Dead, Several Injured After Explosions Go Off Near Finish Line (PHOTOS/ VIDEO)

At least two explosions went off near the finish line at the Boston Marathon today, April 15, killing two people and injuring at least 23 according to the Associated Press.

The explosions went off only a few seconds apart from each other on opposite sides of the street during the 26.2-mile race. The explosions occurred at approximately 2:45 p.m., an hour after the first of the race's 27,000 runners crossed the finish line according to CNN.

"There are people who are really, really bloody," said Laura McLean, a runner from Toronto, who was in the medical tent being treated for dehydration when she was pulled out to make room for victims of the explosions. "They were pulling them into the medical tent."

Bloody spectators were seen being carried away to a medical tent that was set up for tired runners. Police had to make their way around competitors as they ran away from the track course according to the Associated Press.

Several of the injured lost limbs and one police officer was hurt.

"Somebody's leg flew by my head. I gave my belt to stop the blood," said John Ross, a spectator, to The Boston Herald.

Subway service into the area was halted and a number of local schools have been evacuated as well.

"We just heard a lot of sirens, and people were kind of frantic, and it was a bad situation, so we got out of there," Josh Matthews, a spectator at the race, said to CNN.

Troops from the Massachusetts National Guard have also been assisting police according to the Associated Press. Four people are being treated for injuries at the Massachusetts General Hospital.

Runners who hadn't finished the race yet were taken straight down Commonwealth Avenue and into a family meeting area according to an emergency plan that was set in place after the explosion.
