The NBA 2K video game series may have captured the market of simulation-style basketball gaming but there still lacks an arcade-style hoops video game such as those from the 90s. That will soon change with the upcoming NBA Playgrounds.
Arcade-style hoops video game coming to the Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and PC. A few details of the upcoming NBA Playgrounds video game were released via the website IGN on Wednesday. It will be released on the four major gaming consoles to date namely the fairly new Nintendo Switch, Microsoft Xbox One, Sony PS4, and the PC.
Developed by Saber Interactive, the video game looks like a cross between NBA Street and NBA Jam. The basketball players featured in the game have a design that draws heavily on the latter such as their overly large heads and slim bodies. The same can be said about its 2-on-2 arcade-style gameplay. The locations featured and the overall aesthetics, however, seem to be influenced by EA Big.
All current teams are featured in the game. It is unclear if only some or the entire current roster of players is available. Just based off the trailer, one can see that quite a handful of classic players and legends such as Billy Cunningham, James Worthy, Dominique Wilkins, Allen Iverson, Spudd Webb, Shaquille O'Neal, and Patrick Ewing. The locations featured in the game include Rucker, an amusement park, Beats Car Show, Paris, China, and a beach court.
Gameplay specifics are currently unknown although it's been said that the game will allow players to play solo and also have the option to play local and online multiplayer. Players will also be able to level up favorite characters as they progress through the game.
NBA Playgrounds is expected to be made available in May of this year. It will retail at US$20 and will only be available via download.
