General Motors has launched production of the 2.5-liter, 4-cylinder version of their redesigned Chevrolet Impala according to a company press release.
The vehicle will be produced at GM's Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Plant. GM stated this will be the only location the vehicle is produced.
"There are customers in that segment who want to lease, that's their preferred method of financing," Don Johnson, vice president of sales and service for the Chevrolet brand said during a press conference this week. "And we now have a vehicle that appeals to them. We want to make sure they have a financial option that appeals to them as well."
The new model was revealed back at the 2012 New York International Auto Show and quickly earned the respect from car designers and experts from around the world.
Chevrolet has high expectations for the new model, as they've predicted the vehicle will sell more than the 2013 has so far in the U.S. Approximately 170,000 Impala's have been sold according to The Detroit Free Press.
An Impala Limited vehicle will also be sold for fleet customers, which is essentially the same thing as the 2013 model only slightly improved.
Production of the Impala powered by a 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engine started today, April 8 at the Detroit-Hamtramck plant. Detroit-Hamtramck has been producing 3.6-liter V-6 versions of the new Impala a little over a week.
Detroit- Hamtramck employs approximately 1,560 workers, including 1,400 hourly workers represented by UAW Local 22 according to The Detroit News.
"We expect with the Impala we are actually going to drive the segment to grow," said Johnson during the press conference.
GM executives stated recently that they're hoping to change the Impala from approximately 70 percent fleet sales and 30 percent retail sales to 70 percent retail sales and 30 percent fleet sales according to The Detroit Free Press.
GM has already started shipping out 2014 Impala's to dealerships, so the vehicle should go on sale sometime within the near future.
