The incident occurred when a tank that was going through maintenance work and cleaning according to a spokeswoman for the company. The workers were trapped inside the cisterns during the cleaning.

Grupo Modelo has already informed authorities and has opened up an investigation on the accident according to Reuters.

Authorities have also opened an investigation and will be looking into whether or not inhaling toxic fumes caused the deaths inside the brewery.

"Modelo is deeply sorry for this incident and will support the affected families permanently," said a press statement released by Grupo Modelo.

Plant operations resumed on Sunday after authorities deemed it safe for employees to return. There were no other incidents according to Plant Manager Francisco Lopez Bravo.

Since many of the goods produced by Grupo Modelo are shipped to the U.S., the Occupational Health and Safety Administration often works with the company to instill U.S. safety regulations.

The U.S. has very specific safety procedures to "ensure the safety of workers" operating in a confined space. A confined space location is somewhere with a limited means exit or entry like storage areas and tanks for example according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

The incident most likely occurred because safety protocol was not in place according to Reuters.
