Subaru unveiled the brand's first-ever hybrid vehicle this week, the Subaru XV Hybrid, at the New York International Auto Show.

Subaru chose one of its most popular crossover vehicle platforms when developing its first hybrid because they wanted to make their first hybrid something all Subaru fans would want.

Subaru is confident that their hybrid model will be the "most fuel-efficient and lowest-emissions" crossover in the U.S. according to a company press release.

"We have made electrification as a key feature for Subaru. The hybrid we unveil today is a first step in that direction," Tomohiko Ikeda said at the auto show.

The new model is engineered its own hybrid system according to the press release and its internal-combustion engine is a 2.0-liter boxer which produces 148 horsepower and 145 lb.-ft. of torque.

Subaru expects 28 miles per gallon in the city and 34 mpg on the highway according to the Associated Press.

The new model is expected to go on sale in Oct. 2013, but sold as a 2014 vehicle.

The New York Auto Show opens to the public today, March 29, through April 7 at the Javits Center on the West Side of Manhattan.
