World Car Award Winners: Volkswagen Golf, Jaguar F-Type, Tesla Model S, Porsche Boxster Win Top Prizes At New York Auto Show (VIDEO)

At a ceremony hosted by Bridgestone Corporation at the New York Auto Show this week, the World Car Awards (WCA) were presented according to the Associated Press.

The WCA are presented yearly in four different categories: Car Design, Green Car, Performance Car and Car of the Year. Winners are determined by a panel of 66 automotive journalists from 23 different countries. Jurors are appointed by the World Car Steering Committee based on "automotive expertise, experience, credibility and influence" according to the WCA website.

Performance

Among the big winners included the Porsche Boxster and Cayman which were named 2013 World Performance Car of the Year.

Since the inception of the World Car of the Year Awards, Porsche has won World Performance Car twice; for the Cayman 2006 and for the 911 in 2012.

"To be chosen as the winner of the World Performance Car by this global jury is extremely rewarding," said Detlev von Platen, president and CEO of Porsche Cars North America. "The new Boxster is a serious sports car and has become a worldwide success. Its brother, the new Cayman, is launching this month and has already captivated sports car enthusiasts around the world."

Design

Jaguar F-Type was named 2013 World Car Design of the Year according to the Associated Press.

The new Jaguar represents a return to the two-seat, convertible sports car category for the company, as designers focused on "performance, agility and driver involvement."

"No design project has given me greater pleasure than the creation of the F-TYPE. It's a project I've looked forward to from the moment I joined Jaguar, and it's one that's given my team and I great satisfaction," said Director of Design for Jaguar Ian Callum according to the Associated Press. "The F-TYPE is a sports car that is true to Jaguar's design values - beauty of line and purity of form - and I'm honored that the World Car of the Year Design jury has recognized our work with this award."

Green

The Tesla Model S was declared the 2013 World Green Car of the Year at the event, chosen over 21 initial vehicles that entered.

"The success of Model S is a critical step towards the widespread adoption of sustainable transport and we are grateful to the World Car of the Year Jury for the recognition," said Elon Musk , Tesla Motors co-founder and CEO in a company press statement. "Winning the 2013 World Green Car award is great acknowledgment of what Tesla has accomplished with Model S in the last four years."

Car Of The Year

The Volkswagen Golf was declared 2013 World Car of the Year at the auto show, the second consecutive year the company has won the award and the fourth time since 2009.

Jurors determined that the Golf was the best because it was in a "class of its own" and far ahead of other vehicles regarding efficiency and concerns towards the environment.

"We at Volkswagen are all delighted that the Golf has been named 'World Car of the Year'. To win this award again shows that the Golf is and remains in a class of its own all around the world," said Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen in a company press statement. "This car sets new benchmarks again and again, not least in terms of efficiency and environmental credentials. Soon, for instance, the Golf will also be launched as a plug-in hybrid and as a 100% electric car."

To be eligible for the 2013 awards, a vehicle had to be all-new, or "substantially revised", in production and introduced for sale or lease to the public "in quantities of at least 10" in one major market or more between Jan. 1, 2012 and May 30, 2013 according to the WCA website.
