A former state trooper killed his wife with a shotgun inside a Pennsylvania supermarket on Thursday, Mar. 28, before committing suicide just days after she filed for divorce according to local news station WTAJ.
Mark Miscavish, 51, shot and killed his wife, Traci Miscavish, 49, at the Country Market store where his wife worked. Mark retired from the Pennsylvania State Police after 15 years in 2011 according to local authorities.
"He wasn't in his right mind," Gina March, Traci's sister said according to the Associated Press. "I don't believe he's at fault, I believe he needed help. And nobody was there to help him, not the judge, not the cops, not our system."
Mark was seen entering the store around 10 a.m., walked upstairs to the section where Traci worked, and reportedly shot her twice with a shotgun. He then shot and killed himself according to USA Today.
State police have recovered the weapon but have yet to reveal how many times the gun was fired.
Mark was arrested on Jan. 23 after Traci, who had just left him days earlier, returned home to get some of her personal belongings, said Centre County District Attorney Stacy Parks Miller according to Reuters.
Traci was under the impression that her husband was abusing prescription drugs and when she finally had enough and tried taking them away, he reportedly "wrestled her to the ground" and "pinned her arms behind her." Mark then tried duct taping her arms together according to Parks Miller.
Traci filed for divorce and obtained a protection order against her estranged husband, as she feared the worst wound happen if she ever saw him again.
"She said, 'The next time I see him is going to be at the end of a gun,'" Parks Miller said to the Associated Press. "We were very concerned when he got out and we're just devastated now."
State police have planned an afternoon news conference to discuss the case.
