Samsung is upping the ante by launching its own virtual assistant to compete with the likes of Siri, the Google Assistant, and the Amazon Alexa. Samsung Bixby will be one of the many features of the Korean tech giant's much anticipated Galaxy S8 flagship smartphone.

What to expect from virtual assistant Samsung Bixby. Samsung announced that their own virtual assistant was in the works back in 2016 at the TechCrunch Disrupt. This was after the Korean tech giant purchased Viv, the company behind the development of Siri from Apple, a month earlier.

Samsung has confirmed that their work has paid off in the form of Bixby. The virtual assistant is said to be also available on other devices and not only the company's smartphones.

The same month that it announced that it was working on its own virtual assistant, Samsung filed for a trademark in the company's home country seeking protection of the Bixby name. The application filed explained that the name would be for personal information management software, mobile and PC apps with voice recognition, and for mobile phone software that allows hands-free use.

Confirmed via a blog post, Samsung said that Bixby is designed to make it easier to interact with devices. It added that its design helps avoid the complexity of fully-featured devices.

Bixby will make its debut on the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S8 this March 29. Although featured on a smartphone, it will be able to run across a wide range of other devices from the Korean tech giant.

The Galaxy S8 smartphone and the Bixby virtual assistant is expected to redeem Samsung after the mishap involving its Galaxy Note 7 phablet. The Note 7 for battery issues that resulted to the smartphone blowing up and causing serious physical damage to both owners and surroundings alike.
