2013 Kia Optima Hybrid Review: Updated Powertrain Improves Performance, Offers More Cargo Space (PHOTOS/ VIDEO)

Since first being released, the Kia Optima has won awards and the praise of critics and owners a like for its performance, design, and value. Due to the overwhelming success of the original model released in 2011, Kia announced this week plans for two seperate trim level Optima Hybrids.

The new vehicle will offer more features, be "more performance-driven" than its predecessor, and also more fuel-efficient according to a company press release.

The Hybrid will include a 47 hp electric traction motor, a more powerful 47 kW Lithium battery, and a Hybrid Starter Generator. Customers can expect 199 horsepower and 235 lb.-ft. of torque, which is an increase of 40 lb-ft.

The Hybrid is also now available in two different trim levels, EX and LX according to the company press release. The base vehicle achieves an EPA estimate 36 mpg highway and 38 mpg combined, meaning its significantly more efficient than its predecessor.

The EX model achieves an EPA estimated 35 mpg city, 39 mpg highway and 37 mpg combined.

Kia designers constructed a larger trunk than the previous model thanks largely due to a repacked vehicle battery pack.

 The EX option adds navigation assistance with a new Rear-Camera Display, -speaker Infinity audio system, 17-inch wheels, and heated seats just to name a few.

Each option comes with driver and passenger advanced front airbags, front seat-mounted side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags, four-wheel Antilock Brake System (ABS). Other standard safety features include, but are not limited to Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) and Electronic Stability Control (ESC). Traction Control System (TCS) according to a company press release.
