Lesson to drug smugglers: If your plan is to move $1 million worth of illegal narcotics into the U.S., make sure your point of entry is not one of the largest Air Force bases in the world.
A 20-foot-long panga boat was found on the shores north of Wall Beach in the San Luis Obispo area of California, on the property of Vandenberg Air Force base. It's unclear whether the smuggler knew the boat landed in Air Force territory.
In a video posted to YouTube, Col. Nina Armagno, 30th Space Wing commander, reported, "Earlier this afternoon, our defenders discovered what appeared to be a large stash of illegal narcotics on our beach here at Vandenberg Air Force Base ... We immediately secured the scene and started searching the beaches and the local area ... I ordered all facilities to be searched and secured."
The overturned boat concealed several man-sized bales of marijuana reportedly valued at $1 million, according to the Los Angeles Times.
"What it looks like to me are large bags, kind of like dark-colored trash bags, wrapped up and stacked, and actually they have been covered in what looks like an attempt to camouflage them with brush," said Armagno.
The boat's engine had been removed, though it was not clear whether that was an effect of the crash or intentional. No arrests have been made, but officials are searching the waters around the base and checking beach areas by foot.
"We are still investigating," said Armagno in the video. She said no weapons or suspects were found on the scene.
