What Happened to Michael Schumacher?

Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher suffered in a terrible accident over three years ago. The seven-time F1 champion's health condition has since been surrounded in secrecy.

French Alps, 2013. According to an article from The Guardian, Schumacher fell and hit his head while skiing on an unmarked slope on Dec. 29, 2013. He was with friends and his 14-year-old-son at the Méribel resort in the French Alps.

During the official press conference in Grenoble, Michael's doctors revealed that he was in a coma when he arrived at the hospital. He had to be operated upon immediately. Although he was conscious after the crash, his condition remained very serious, and they opted to keep him in an artificial coma.

Apparently, according to Jean-Francois Payen, the clinic's head of anesthetics, Michael suffered bleeding and heavy bruising on his brain. They had to stop the swelling and supply the Formula One legend's brain with oxygen while keeping his body at the recommended temperature.

2014 Schumacher Updates. After that initial press conference, Schumacher updates became far and few. The next official statement from the Formula 1 legend's family came in April 2014. The F1 champ's family revealed that he had shown some "moments of consciousness and awakening."

After three months, Michael Schumacher was able to leave the Grenoble Hospital. He was allegedly out of the coma by then. After another three months, it was revealed that the Formula 1 champ moved from the Lausanne hospital to his family home in Lake Geneva. According to Mirror, the official statement read: "Henceforth, Michael's rehabilitation will take place at his home. Considering the severe head injuries he suffered, progress was made in the past weeks and months.

2015 Schumacher Updates. In May of 2015, the F1 legend's long-time manager Sabine Kehm told a German press outlet that Michael was "making progress." Additionally, FIA president Jean Todt gave an update in December 2015 that Schumacher was "still fighting."

In September 2016, Michael's lawyer Felix Damm outlined the severity of the Formula One legend's injuries in court after a German magazine claimed that he could already walk. To clarify the issue, Damm stated in court that the racecar driver cannot walk.

What happened to Michael Schumacher? In December of last year, photos of Michael since the accident were allegedly circulated European media outlets for £ 1million. This caused a stir among the police who immediately launched an investigation as to how photographers were able to access the Formula 1 legend's home. Kehm once again commented that they had no official statement or Schumacher update. "Michael's health is not a public issue, and so we will continue to make no comment in that regard," the manager said.

At the present, there are little to no updates about the seven-time Formula 1 racer. Fans and the F1 community continue to support Michael Schumacher and his family and are still hoping for his recovery. Stay tuned for more updates in the future.
