After three days of testing, Fernando Alonso has completed 148 laps of the Circuit De Catalunya, one less than Mercedes managed between its two drivers on Wednesday alone. Now, what is the issue in McLaren engine?

As previously reported by Auto World News, the overhaul of the rulebook allowed the teams to take a different approach to their cars. Honda took the opportunity and made some significant changes to the engine. However, McLaren went through an oil system issue during the Honda engine on the opening day of testing. This issue forced the team to stop running.

Now a week later, according to ESPN the engine problem still remains. The Honda engine has no reliability and no power. Fernando Alonso says that the chassis responds well to changes and everything about it works fine. He is satisfied with the way he attacks the corners and he enjoys driving the car, however, the engine is a big problem and they are 30km/h down on every straight because of it. They are not pushing the speed that others are doing because of a lack of power. McLaren is now lagging well behind its rivals because of these problems.

According to Motorsport, McLaren needs immediate reaction about the situation. McLaren has been dominating the sport for many years, and they need to fix the problems as a team if they want to stay competitive this year. The biggest concern it seems is finding power from the engine. On top of that, the oil tank design issue that Honda suffered on day one is not something that should have happened. Alonso also noted that they are still discovering little things about the car, but there is nothing to worry for Australia. After testing is completed, McLaren should be in good position to fix the problems and be fully ready to compete at a good level. However, the question still remains, will they have enough power in the engine.
