German automotive company Volkswagen Group have recently previewed a futuristic self-driving car concept. Simply called as the Volkswagen Sedric, the futuristic car was unveiled ahead of the Geneva Motor Show.

Sedric, according to Volkswagen, is an acronym for "self-driving car." The concept car looks like a pod and can accommodate up to four passengers. The concept car was developed as part of Volkswagen's Together-Strategy 2025 program. This program aims to transform the Volkswagen from a traditional engineering company towards a more specialized company that focuses on integrated mobility.

Aside from pushing the concept of mobility and technology, the Volkswagen Sedric also aims to integrate the idea behind shared economy, according to Auto Car. The idea being that the car can be used as a platform for multiple users.

The Volkswagen Sedric is designed to support Level 5 autonomous driving technologies. This means that the futuristic car will not require a human driver. The car can be summoned using a remote which Volkswagen simply calls "The Button." The car company claims that "a single touch of the button guarantees mobility for everyone, at any time and at any location."

Aside from being a self-driving car, Volkswagen is also designing the Sedric to work as a personal digital assistant. Users should be able to tell the car their destination, and the route they will take in order to get there. Volkswagen said that the Sedric's windshield is an OLED display that can feed data to passengers and give them information about their immediate surroundings, according to Engadget.

Volkswagen did not provide any detail about the Sedric's cost or when the company plans to roll out the concept car into the roads. However, Volkswagen did confirm that the Sedric is the "father" of concepts within the company. This could mean that the Sedric will as a platform which can be used to develop a more viable self-driving car.
