The Japanese car manufacturer is supposedly focusing on size and price rather than performance for the all-electric version of the Honda Clarity. It has been reported that the Clarity will have a price tag of only US$35,000 and a range of only 81 miles on a single charge.

The all-electric Clarity. According to a report from Automotive News, the all-electric version of the Clarity will only have 80 miles of range on one charge. This will obviously affect the Japanese car manufacturer's goal of becoming the global leader in green vehicles.

The low mile range is attributed to the vehicle's size. The Clarity's platform is a size constraint for a larger battery pack. Also, the price of which the vehicle is planned to be at hinders the company from putting in a larger and more powerful battery.

The car manufacturer completely understands the limitations of the Clarity EV regarding performance and price. American Honda Motor vice president of environmental business development Steve Carter was quoted as saying, "A pillar of the Honda brand is affordability, and if (the company) came out with some obscenely priced long-range electric car, what does that do for the brand?"

However, it should be taken into consideration that this will put the all-electric Clarity behind the Chevrolet Bolt EV and every other electric vehicle on the market. The Bolt EV, for example, boasts a range of 238 miles on a single charge and costs around the same as the Clarity EV's expected price tag.

If the Japanese car company can lower down the Clarity EV's expected retail price, the EV market may make room for the vehicle. However, it will still face tough competition from the Bolt EV and Tesla's upcoming Model 3 unless it offers something that no other current or upcoming electric vehicle can.
