Body Burned In Cabin, Charred Remains Believed To Be Cop-killer Dorner (VIDEO)

A massive shootout took place between an ex-L.A.P.D. officer and fugitive Christopher Dorner and police officers at a California mountain cabin.

The burned shell of the cabin is still too hot for police to enter, but police believe Dorner entered the cabin and never escaped before it burned down and investigators expect to find Dorner's charred body inside, ABC News reported.

The cabin caught fire and burned as police officers bombarded the cabin with gunfire. Dormer was last seen entering the cabin, which burned down. He is presumed dead.

The event was the finale to the largest manhunt in Los Angeles Police Department history, The New York Times reported. Dormer is suspected of killing at least three people and wounding several others in a rampage that has lasted more than a week, The Times states.

Police are working to officially identify the body, but "have reason to believe that it is him," said San Bernardino County sheriff's spokeswoman Cynthia Bachman, ABC News reported.

The standoff ended just miles from where Dorner's trail went cold last week. Police were tipped off again after two women that Dormer took hostage escaped a cabin not far from the final scene.

After reportedly hijacking a car, Dorner, who was armed an assault rifle and a sniper rifle, took off into the woods on foot, where he was pursued by sheriff's deputies until he took cover in a cabin and started firing.

Two deputies were wounded in the firefight and airlifted to a nearby hospital, where one died, police said. The second deputy received non-life threatening injuries, ABC News reported.

"It was horrifying to listen to that firefight and to hear those words. 'Officer down' is the most gut-wrenching experience that you can have as a police officer," said LAPD spokesman Lt. Andrew Neiman, according to ABC News.

Heavily armed SWAT teams surrounded the cabin, reportedly it in armored tank-like vehicles. They fired tear gas inside, but never entered the cabin, ABC News reported.

Police reported hearing a single gunshot go off inside the cabin just as they began to see smoke and fire. As the fire grew ammunition inside the cabin begin to ignite, ABC News reported.

Dorner is accused of killing four people. The manhunt was started after Dorner allegedly killed Riverside police officer Michael Crain and published a manifesto pledging to kill dozens more.
