The asteroid, which is actually small when compared to previously discovered spacerocks, will come closer to Earth than many high-flying satellites as well. The report by Space.com said the asteroid, which is being called DA14, will be viewable by using binoculars or telescopes as it flies by.

"The flyby creates a unique opportunity for researchers to observe and learn more about asteroids," NASA officials said in a press statement this week.

Asteroid 2012 DA14 was discovered last year and is about half the size of a football field. The spacerock is also the same size as the asteroid that exploded over Siberia, Russia in 1908 according to Space.com.
