New Toyota Supra 2018 Leak Reveals It Will Have a BMW Engine

The Toyota Supra 2018 has gotten a recent update. A new leak now reveals that it will have three engine choices, some of which could be the same engines as the 2018 BMW Z4.

Supra-Z5 Joint Engineering Venture. The Toyota sports car was first introduced in 1978 and went out of production in 2002. As previously reported, the new Supra and BMW Z5 are being developed together through a joint engineering venture.

The Bavarian-Japanese sports car duo are both developed in Munich under BMW's direction. However, the result of the venture will still be two independent cars.

The resurrected Toyota Supra is expected to be available only in a fixed-roof coupe style. The BMW Z5 will be offered as a roadster only and was reported to be the replacement of the discontinued Z4. However, some reports also claim that the new Supra is a collaboration with the 2018 Z4. Regardless of whether or not the new BMW will be a Z4 or Z5, but it is sure that it is a collaboration with the 2018 Supra.

Three New Engines. There have been no new developments surrounding the new Supra or Z5 until recently. BMW Blog reported that the new Toyota Supra will be allowed to use BMW engines. There will be a total of three new engines, thanks to a catalog leak. The same engines will probably be utilized for the new Z5 as well.

The entry level model is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine from the B48 generation. The Supra will offer different levels of power, reportedly between 191 and 252 horsepower. The range topper model of the new Supra will have the B58 straight six-cylinder engine. This can deliver 340 horsepower maximum with 331 pounds-ft of torque.

If the new Toyota Supra and the Z5 will share similar engines, the engine range of the Z5 has already leaked. The sDrive20i will have 191 horsepower and a 2.0-liter R4 engine. The sDrive30i will have 252 horsepower and feature a 2.0-liter R4 engine. And finally, the M40i will have 340 horsepower and a 3.0-liter R6 engine.

In addition, A BMW M performance variant is also likely for the Z5. It is also possible that the Z5 M will be somewhat more motorized.

The roadster and the coupe will be similar save for their dimensions. Another interesting revelation is that the new BMW Roadster will be heavier than the Supra coupe. The lightest variant of the Supra is expected to be around 1,350 kilograms, with the top of the line model going up to 1,430 kilograms.

The 2018 Toyota Supra will not release until next year, but many are obviously excited for its resurrection. Are you excited about the new Supra? Share your thoughts and comments below.
