BMW has already announced what's on its menu for the 2017 Geneva Motor Show. The new 5-Series Touring and the newly refreshed 4-Series coupe are set to debut this March. Although specifics for the 3rd model are not yet official, the German company did noted that they will showcase a BMW i8 Limited Edition.
In addition to the already mentioned models that will grace the motor show this March, a fresh BMW i8 option is set to hit the stage. This will be called the BMW i8 Protonic Frozen Black Edition.
Well, yes. There will be two new available paint color for the new plug-in hybrid sports car. To complement the limited edition paint job, a few bespoke interior styling will also be added, reports Express UK. The BMW i8 Frozen Yellow Edition would not be available until later this year.
Since the BMW i8 is a plug-in hybrid, it utilizes the eDrive tech combining all-electric motor efficiency and TwinPower Turbo engine power. The hybrid's 7.1 kWh lithium-ion battery is mated with the TwinPower Turbo 3-cylinder engine producing a massive 357 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque.
Its 0-62 mph can be accomplished in 4.4 seconds with a top speed of 155mph. It can also get up to 76 MPGe fuel efficiency, thanks to the plug-in hybrid eDrive.
CNET reports that a newly refreshed BMW i8 could be just around the corner. This would likely focus on the mechanical updates such as bigger battery plus increased horsepower.
Since BMW's vehicles tend to follow an 8-year cycle, this could place the hybrid in for a 2018 refresh. And the reason why the i8 Spyder is still in the drawing board.
BMW has become the successful plug-in hybrid makers in the high-end market thanks to the vehicle's performance. In fact, the German automaker has sold over 100,000 all-electric or plug-in hybrid cars. Also, its compact BMW i3 also made waves in its electric vehicle segment.
A number of car enthusiasts and fans look forward to the BMW i8 Limited Edition during its debut at the Geneva Motor Show. Along with this are the debut of the 5-Series Touring and the all new 4-Series Coupe.
