Hyundai Elantra Sets New Sales Record In U.S., Could Exceed 200,000 Units Before 2013

Hyundai Motors will end 2012 on a strong note, thanks to their newest Elantra model which has set another all-time sales record in 2012. The vehicle has passed last year's total of 186,361 vehicles sold this month according to a company press release.

With a little less than a week left, the Elantra could become only the second Hyundai vehicle to break the 200,000 units sold mark in sales. The only other Hyundai vehicle to do it was the Sonata, both of which have been produced in Hyundai's Alabama facility plant.

"With a full year of three-shift U.S. production in 2013 we hope to introduce even more American car buyers to Elantra next year," said John Krafcik, president and CEO, Hyundai Motor America in the press release.

Krafcik also stated that adding a third shift to the Alabama plant allowed the company to meet the high customer demand for the Elantra. Being able to get reliable vehicles out at a quick pace is the main reason the company has thrived for so long.

The Elantra was completely redesigned for the 2011 model, and the company released a slightly enhanced version for the newest model. The company reports that customers "rave" about the improved calibrated steering, fog lights and other features that the vehicle comes equipped with according to Hyundai.

The current model is more expensive however than the 2011 model, which was $14,945 once released. The base price for the new Hyundai model goes for around $16,450, and the automatic transmission option usually increases the price closer to $17,500.

Customers can expect to get around 29/40 city/highway fuel economy as well according to Hyundai.

The newest Elantra model has an 8.8 overall rating on U.S. News Ranking and Reviews, mainly for its affordability, fuel economy which competes with any hybrid vehicle for less money, and safety features which made it an Insurance IIHS Top Safety Pick.

"Elantra buyers love its recipe of ALG-class-leading residual value, bold design, and outstanding value," said Krafcik in the press release.
