New Mazda RX7: The Rotary-Engine Drifting Machine Will Soon Return

The 2018 Mazda RX7 was confirmed to return at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show. The Japanese automobile manufacturer unveiled a new RX-VISION with a front engine and rear-wheel-drive that has an aggressive and bold design. The company further confirmed that a new generation rotary engine will be under the hood.

RX-VISION. The concept car needs to undergo a lot of changes before it becomes an actual production vehicle. Top Speed reported that they expect it to have a taller roof, a less raked front windscreen, chrome window surrounds, a visible B-pillar.

For the front, the site has also reported expecting the new Mazda RX7 to gain a revised grille and bumper, as well as a new pair of headlamps. The overall shape and size of the production grille are expected to remain similar to the concept car. The Japanese car manufacturer is also expected to retain most of the features of the rear but may have a revised tailgate and redesigned taillights.

The RX-VISION sported a simple and clear interior which could very much be the actual interior of the production car. The instrument cluster, door panels, and center console may be upgraded with the latest tech features. An infotainment system and navigation system are also expected to be added.

Not much is known about the drivetrain of the new Mazda RX7. A company representative has reportedly hinted that the sports car may use turbocharging similar to that of the Porsche Cayman.

Moreover, Mazda is also allegedly developing a new generation rotary engine which aims to achieve fuel economy and lower CO2 emissions. This was one of the problems of the RX8.

While the Japanese automobile manufacturer has yet to give more details, it is known that the new Mazda will be a 2018 model. Does this mean that they will soon release later this year or sometime next year? Well, that remains to be seen.

The 2018 Mazda was a favorite of many drifting enthusiasts because of its unique rotary engine. One of its main rivals was the Toyota Supra which is also confirmed to return. Digest Cars is very excited about the new car and expects it to look like the FD RX7. Are you excited for the new Mazda and when do you think it will be unveiled? Thoughts and comments below.
