PSY’s “Gangnam Style” Makes History, Hits 1 Billion Views On YouTube (WATCH VIDEO)

South Korean rapper PSY made history this week when his crossover hit song "Gangnam Style" reached 1 billion views on YouTube. The song is also the most watched video on YouTube after it passed Justin Bieber's "Baby" in November.

The song was first posted on YouTube in July, and it took just five months for the song to reach 1 billion views. YouTube celebrated PSY's accomplishment with a dancing PSY doodle next to their logo.

"I didn't even imagine 'Gangnam Style' would get 1 million views, let alone 1 billion views! Is this the Tru-PSY show?" the rapper said in a press statement to Reuters.

The 34-year-old rapper from Korea is the first to achieve mainstream success in the U.S., as his hit song has reached as high as number two on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. His video for "Gangnam Style" has averaged 200 million views per month since being released.

Bieber's video for "Baby" has reached over 800 million views, which was a record before "Gangnam" was released.

PSY recently performed in front of President Barack Obama, met with U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and has single-handedly started a movement among the K-pop industry which is now looking to follow in PSY's footsteps by branching out into mainstream Western pop music.

The rapper's success hasn't just been on YouTube however, as Google recently confirmed that the term "Gangnam Style" was the second highest trending search in 2012 according to The New York Times. The term was just behind Whitney Houston for trending topics, who died this past February.
