Ford introduces the SmartLink system to older models that basically upgrades a vehicle's connectivity features. The system will be able to provide the connectivity features via a small plug-in device.

The SmartLink system for older models. The American car manufacturer has come up with an innovative way to introduce newer connectivity features to its older models via the SmartLink system. Ford and Lincoln vehicle owners of 2010 to 2016 year models will be able to upgrade their cars' features by using a small dongle-like device that you plug in.

To use SmartLink, a user just needs to plug in the device directly into the OBDII port that is located right below the steering wheel. Once inserted and activated, a user will be able to gain access to connectivity features that a number of newer models do not even have. Two particularly amazing features are remote start and door locking via smartphone connectivity.

SmartLink will also be able to track the vehicle's health and security and send tracked data directly to a user's smartphone. In addition, users can utilize the data to schedule service appointments via the designated app on the smartphone. Connectivity features include 4G LTE and Wi-Fi hotspot both of which can accommodate eight devices.

Executive vice-president of Global Marketing, Sales, and Service Stephen Odell says that "Ford SmartLink will surprise and delight owners of recent model-year vehicles by adding some of today's most popular connectivity features... Offering it through our dealerships is another way to keep us connected with our customers and earn their loyalty."

The car manufacturer has stated that the device will be made available beginning in summer at both Ford and Lincoln dealerships. In addition, the device will be available online.

There isn't a price set yet for the SmartLink system. However, the company has stated that more details will be provided before it is made available.
