General Motors, Chevrolet Donating 24 Vans To Habitat For Humanity, Will Help In Hurricane Sandy Recovery

General Motors announced this week that they will be donating 24 Chevrolet Express vans to Habitat for Humanity to help assist communities still recovering from Hurricane Sandy.

The van will be transported from Atlanta to locations like New York and New Jersey according to a company press release.

"As the initial reports of Sandy's devastation recede from the headlines, now the hard work of recovery begins to help affected communities and people get back on their feet," said GM Chairman and CEO Dan Akerson.

Chevrolet agreed to donate 24 Express vans including 19 C-20 Panel Vans and 15 passenger Express vans that will be come equipped with tools to help with the reconstruction effort in New York and New Jersey.

Tools will also be donated to Habitat for Humanity by Lowe's and Robert Bosch Tool Co.

The vans donated by GM, Chevrolet and the GM Foundation for Sandy relief efforts now equals over $2.8 million according to the company press release. The company also made a huge donation of cargo vans in October.

"The Habitat Mobile Response Units are an exciting new offering from Habitat for Humanity that will assist families who need help with critical home repairs," said Jonathan Reckford, CEO of Habitat for Humanity International in a press statement. "With winter upon us and many families in need of support, these response units will facilitate our efforts in communities affected by Hurricane Sandy.

Over 30 Express vans were donated on Oct. 30 by GM, including five Express passenger vans, five Chevy Tahoe Hybrid SUVs and around 10 Chevrolet Traverse crossover vehicles. The models were donated to the American Red Cross according to GM.

"We are immensely grateful to all the volunteers who will work alongside these response units this week and in the months ahead, and to Chevrolet, Lowe's and Bosch for their generous donations," said Reckford in a statement.  

The Habitat for Humanity will be put to work in Staten Island, N.Y. and Union Beach, N.J. first where volunteers will be asked to help rebuild specific communities affected by Hurricane Sandy.

Chevrolet is one of the world's largest car brands in the world, doing business in over 140 countries. The company sells on average 4 million cars and trucks a year.
