Ford has announced that it will be offering its famous connectivity service this summer for all Ford customers who have the vehicles belonging to models from 2010-2016. The company said that it would sell a plug-in device to enable features such as remote start, security alerts, a WiFi hotspot and vehicle location assistance on 2010-2016 Ford vehicles and Lincoln cars. The customers can upgrade their vehicles with the latest version of Ford SmartLink anytime.

The components that will be included in the update will be 4G LTE enabled OBD-II plug-in device, an app that will assist the software and a Web Portal that will make the remote features work the car to be in control of its owner. Ford said that after two years of hard work, its creative and technology team has finally developed a system that is very accurate and very handy as well.

Ford's executive vice president of global marketing, sales of service, Stephen Odell said, "Ford SmartLink will surprise and delight owners of recent-model-year vehicles by adding some of the today's most popular connectivity features. Offering it through our dealerships is another way to keep us connected with our customers and earn their loyalty."

Ford teamed up with Delphi Automotive and Verizon Wireless in developing the new dongle. The device would take on against similar products offered by other companies including devices from AT&T Verizon that add a Wifi hotspot to older model vehicles.

Meanwhile, Fusion Energi, C-Max Energi, and Focus Electric owners are the first companies to access the new home-to-car capabilities via Amazon and Ford. Folks who currently own an Echo Dot, Echo or Amazon Tap can remote start lock, or unlock doors, and even get details on their vehicles even from the comfort of their living room through voice commands.

CNET reported that starting this summer, Ford drives with Sync 3 can tap into Alexa's skills while driving. Drivers can now play and resume audiobooks, order items on Amazon, and transfer local destinations to the in-car navigation system.

Ford said that customers can get the SmartLink update from the respective dealer upon taking an appointment. Users can also see the details of the said project on the official page of Ford.
