General Motors released a press release this week stating that the brand-new Cadillac ATS won the 2013 Popular Mechanics Automotive Excellence Award in the "Luxury" category.
The complete list of vehicles that won awards in the other categories is now available on PopularMechanics.com and will be released in the December issue of the magazine. The magazine hit newsstands on Tuesday.

"The ATS is the first Cadillac to fully assault the entry-level luxury sport sedan class long dominated by German brands," editors of the magazine wrote about the vehicle. "Cadillac delivers this substantial sedan for under $35,000. That's one of the best luxury sport sedan deals of the year."
The annual Popular Mechanics Automotive Excellence Awards recognizes the best 10 vehicles based on "functionality, style, performance, technology, and driving character" according to the press release. The new sedan was reviewed, tested and then finally chosen over other new luxury cars from around the world.
The base price for the vehicle will be $33,900. It was important for the company to put out a car for less than $35,000 in order to compete with its top competitors and to improve sales numbers for Cadillac models in 2013.
"The ATS was developed as an all-new, ground-up approach to deliver a segment-winning vehicle," said Don Butler, vice president of Cadillac Marketing in the press release. "Because of this, it is rewarding to be recognized by one of the premier publications for science, technology, and automotive innovation."
The ATS is the first Cadillac to compete with a number of different German companies for luxury sport sedan dominance. Popular Mechanics argues that the ATS is better than anything put out by Audi or BMW in at least five years.
The ATS comes equipped with FE3 suspension, Magnetic Ride Control damping and Brembo brakes. The car comes with four doors, five seats and four wheel drive as well. Cadillac offers the vehicle in rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive versions, with a choice of powerful four and six-cylinder engines.
