Shelby American just announced that a new and exciting model will be presented on Jan. 19 during the Barrett-Jackson event in Scottsdale. All evidence point to the 2017 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, considering that the GT350 will not be renewed at the moment. A recent leak also revealed that Ford has been working on the GT500.
Ford seems determined to surprise everybody with the range of the new Mustang. It has been teased and spotted on the streets a couple of times and just when everybody expects it to be at the Detroit Auto Show, it was nowhere to be found.
But then Ford pulled fans right back when Shelby American announced in their official Facebook account that a mysterious rebirth of a legend is coming January 9 accompanied by hashtags #50years #Snakebit #TheLegendReturns. In a tense and dark silhouette, the company founded by Carroll Shelby invites people to the Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale, Arizona, where the brand is said to present the new model.
The first two hashtags refer to an anniversary or a model that is already 50 years old, while the second makes it clear that its name is associated with a snake, probably the 2017 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Super Snake or Cobra GT500 KR. The first was made available in 1967 while Cobra GT500 KR in the following year, with the addition of the 428 Cobra Jet V8.
The new GT500 have been rumored on several occasions and AutoWorldNews even reported the website leak wherein the 2017 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 magically appeared in Ford's website listing after a user search it in Google. So it is highly possible that it is indeed the GT500. The question, therefore, is, if the new GT500 will be based on the new 2018 Mustang.
The announcement came the same day as Carroll Shelby's birthday. Shelby passed away on May 10, 2012, and he should have been 94 years old now but his contribution in the automotive world will forever be remembered. Check out Shelby American's mysterious Facebook announcement below.
