On order by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Chrysler is being forced to recall 919,000 Jeep SUVs worldwide due to air bag issues occurring while people are driving.
The NHSTA stated today that the recall will affect Jeep Grand Cherokee models released from 2002 through 2004. Jeep Liberty models released from 2002 through 2003 are also listed in the recall as well.
The main issue being reported by over 215 customers is that the front and side air bags are being inflated while the vehicle is in motion and no accident has occurred. The problem is taking place due to a part in the air bag control computer failing after working for over or almost 10 years with no issues.
No crashes have been reported because of the issue as of yet, but 81 people have reported to Chrysler they have suffered minor injuries from the malfunction.
The recall affects 775,000 SUV models inside the U.S., 49,000 models in Canada and 22,000 in Mexico. The other models affected by the issue are outside of North America according to the report.
The NHSTA started their investigation of the air bags in early October of last year after multiple complaints from owners that their air bags were deploying for no reason.
Chrysler spokesman Eric Mayne told The Boston Herald that dashboard warning lights usually come on before the air bags are released. If this does occur in your vehicle Mayne stated, than you should contact your local Jeep dealer to have the car examined by a professional.
The company stated that they will start sending letters out in the mail in January to notify owners of the recall and where they should go to have their car fixed.
Jeep auto technicians will install an electrical filer to fix the problem free of charge according to Jeep.
