Police Update: New York Nanny Attempted Suicide After Killing Children, Might Have Mental Condition

In a new report released by the New York Police Department, the nanny who killed two children this past week reportedly attempted suicide right before the mother of the two kids returned home.

Yoselyn Ortega used a kitchen knife to kill 6-year-old and a 2-year-old inside of an apartment located on Manhattan's Upper West Side according to Yahoo.

Marina Krim, the mother of the two children returned to the apartment at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday with her other child and found her two kids dead in their bathtub with multiple gash marks on their bodies.

Ortega was found alive next to them on the bathroom floor with slash marks on her throat.

The children were taken to a local hospital where they were pronounced dead. Doctors determined Ortega was in critical condition by the time she was brought in and was put into a medically induced coma, but she has since come out of it according to DNAinfo.com.

Ortega has yet to talk to investigators.

New reports have determined shortly before the incident Ortega was considering going to a therapist to deal with mental issues she had been dealing with lately.

"She lost a lot of weight. She looked very unhealthy. It looked like she was going through some problems," Ortega's neighbor, Ruben Diaz, told The New York Post. "She had aged a lot, like seven years in a few months."

Krim returned to the apartment after waiting for Ortega at a local pool where her kids were suppose to have a swimming lesson. Krim got worried after Ortega failed to show up.

Since the incident, people have been questioning whether or not to leave their children alone with nannies that they have hired.

"It's a horrible tragedy, but it doesn't make me question my nanny at all," said Elizabeth McCarthy, a single mother of a 6-year-old boy to The Huffington Post. "For me, I found somebody I trust. She's an incredible part of my son's life. She's a wonderful person, she's raised children of her own and this doesn't make me in the least bit question anything about her."
