‘Frankenstorm’ Hurricane Sandy May Be Worst To Hit U.S. Northeast In 100 Years (PATH MAP PHOTOS)

Although it is too early to know for sure, current forecasts are predicting that Hurricane Sandy could possibly create the worst storm to affect the U.S. Northeast in over 100 years.

Sandy, which is now being referred to as a "Frankenstorm" may wind up combing with another storm from the Midwest to create a storm that could cause serious damage throughout the Northeast.

The predicted storm is also being compared to "The Perfect Storm" of 1991 which struck near the coast of New England.

"The Perfect Storm only did $200 million of damage and I'm thinking a billion" this time, said Jeff Masters, meteorlogy director of Weather Undeground to Yahoo. "Yeah, it will be worse."

The storm could affect anywhere on the Northeast and places like Massachusetts, Maryland, Delaware, and New Jersey should take caution.

The current status concludes that Sandy is still a Category 2 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of over 100 mph. As of Thursday night the storm was moving north from the Bahamas at 17 mph.

"The lion's share of guidance indicates that the circulation associated with Hurricane Sandy will pass close enough to the amplifying polar trough over the eastern United States to become incorporated into a hybrid vortex over the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast next Tuesday," the Hydrometeorological Prediction Center wrote in its morning forecast discussion according to The Star Ledger.

Some meteorologists have started speculating what may actually wind up happening next week as well. Heavy rain, high wind and a chance of snow could come to certain states on the Northeast as early as Sunday. Hurricane Sandy is supposed to arrive on the coast around Monday night or Tuesday.

A tropical-storm watch has already been issued in Florida and North Carolina according to the National Hurricane Center. A storm watch means that intense storm conditions could occur at some point, meanwhile a tropical storm warning means those conditions will most likely happen according to the NHC.

1 to 2 feet of snow has already been predicted in locations like West Virginia and Pennsylvania as well.

"It borders on rare to unprecedented on its potential," said David Robinson, the state climatologist at Rutgers University to The Star Ledger. "This is a threat that should be taken seriously. I'm not suggesting people should run right now to the grocery store for your bread and milk, but it needs to be watched closely."

The Associated Press has reported that the hurricane is currently still in the Bahamas and it has killed a total of 21 people already.
