Top Vehicle Colors In 2012: White Tops PPG Industries List Again

For the second year in a row, car buyers around the world bought more cars in the color white than any other color.

Of all the vehicles manufactured this past year, 22 percent were made with white paint, making it the most popular color yet again. Silver finished a close second in 2012, as 20 percent of cars were made with silver paint.

Black was third at 19 percent, followed by Gray and Red who both finished in the top five.

The rankings were done by PPG Industries Inc, which is a Pittsburgh-based automotive paint supplier that sells paint to many manufacturers around the world including BMW and Ford.

White has made a comeback in recent years after being the most popular car color of the 1980's. It is considered modern once again after Silver dominated much of the early 2000's. Paint suppliers are making more white paint options available as well to compliment specific car styles regardless if the car is a minivan or Ferrari.

"Buyers want to purchase a color they won't grow tired of over an extended period of time," said Michelle Killen, General Motor's lead color designer for exterior paints.

White is considered by most car companies to be a "safe" color, along with other colors like black and silver. These colors are considered safe because even during an economic crisis like the U.S. is going through currently, car models in these colors will sell regardless.

People are less likely to buy a car in a color that they "may" like or could grow to love during a recession because if they're committing to a monthly payment, they want to love everything about the car. As the U.S. continues to try and bounce back, experts believe that brighter colors may become more popular especially on sport and luxury cars.

A person's color choice could also depend on where he or she lives as well, though the reason why has not been explained. For example, more red vehicles are sold North America than anywhere else. Meanwhile more Gray and Black cars are sold in Europe for some reason.
