The 2018 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, thought to soon become the fastest car in its segment, was slated to be released in 2018. However, spy photos and leaked details of the car led to speculation that it might be available as early as 2017. If this happens, Chevrolet Camaro LZ1 might be facing stiff competition in 2017 onwards.

One piece of evidence that it's possible that the 2018 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 might come as early as 2017 was the fact that prototypes of the said model were seen being tested at Ford test centers in Michigan, USA, according to Motor Authority. It was observed that the 2018 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 will feature a unique front, increased width in the track and a bulge on the hood.

Believed to have been built to beat the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, the 2018 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 will be powered by a twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which will either be the 5.0-liter Coyote V8 or the 5.2-liter Voodoo engine, according to Car and Driver. Top speed can be expected from this road monster, matched with manual transmission. This powerful car will be priced from $65,000 and up, slightly higher than the price of its predecessors, the GT350 and GT350R.

The 2018 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 is made mostly of lightweight materials like aluminum, carbon fiber and reinforced carbon plastics to save on weight and to increase speed, according to Auto Guide. It is expected to be unveiled at the auto show in Detroit in January next year.

With its power, the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 is set to present a challenge to other cars, especially its closest rival, Chevrolet's Camaro ZL1. While in the past, Ford Mustang trailed behind the Cherolet Camaro ZL1, it is now Camaro's turn to lead the way in the wake of the 2018 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500.
