It had been widely rumored already that the next smartphone from Apple, dubbed iPhone 5, is expected to come with larger screen. A new report, from Wall Street Journal, suggested that the much-anticipated phone will also become thinner.
According to “people familiar with the matter”, a new technology allowed Apple’s component manufacturer in Asia to come up with thin screen for the next iPhone, the Journal reported.
Unlike previous models, where smartphones had to have a separate touch-screen layer in addition to the LCD, the new technology integrates touch sensors into the LCD itself. As a result, the screen will become thinner and the graphics will improve.
Apple had been alleged to unveil a 4.0-inch screen iPhone this fall. It is 0.5 inches larger than all the previous models that Apple produced. The larger screen was a reasonable move, considering that its chief competitor Samsung Galaxy S3 boasts 4.8-inch display. The larger screen could have made the device heavier, but the thinner screen could offset the weight. iPhone 4S is currently 9.3mm thick, and the elimination of the extra layer could reduce about half a millimeter.
Samsung Galaxy S3 is 8.6mm and Motorola Droid RAZR is 7.1mm thick.
Other rumors of iPhone 5 suggested that the device will sport a quad-core A6 processor, powered by Apple’s new mobile operating system, iOS 6. The phone is also rumored to support near-field-communication (NFC) and 4G LTE. Some suggested, based on Apple’s recent patent, that the camera lenses could be replaceable and upgradable on the new iPhone.
Industry experts expect the device to launch this fall in September or October, but there are also rumors that Apple will release the iPhone 5 next month.
