Tesla might have its hands full at the moment what with the around 400k bookings that it received with the Model 3, the company stated it does have new models in the making to take care of future demands.
There is the Model Y which will be to Model X what the Model 3 is to Model S. Simply put, the upcoming Model Y will be priced lower than the Model X and will have a mass market appeal as the Model 3.
That said, the likely price of the Model Y could be anywhere between $40,000 and $45,000 before incentives come into the picture, Automotive News reported. To be based on the Model 3 platform, the new Model Y will have AWD as a standard and should have a minimum range of about 215 miles.
However, the new SUV might not have the famed gull-wing door that has shot the Model X to instant stardom. A few quality issues along with the cost of manufacturing them are likely reasons Tesla might give up on those for the more conventional types. However, the earliest the Model Y can be seen driving on streets is around 2019 or 2020.
The Model 3, in prototype form, has been launched, though that didn't stop over 370,000 people from already placing their orders for the car. And the reason is obvious, the $35,000 starting price which before incentive is too lucrative to resist for what promises to shape up to be the coolest looking car in town.
The 215-mile rang,e along with other tech wizardry like Autopilot, are other reasons why the Model 3 is an instant hit even though Tesla is yet to come up with the final production models of the car. Tesla is promising deliveries to begin around end-2017 though experts believe it's not likely to pick up pace before 2019 at least.
Roadster 2
Tesla said they would begin working on a new Roadster to replace the one it had launched back in 2008, claimed Business Insider. Tesla was just coming into being then and the car too was based on gliders sourced from Lotus. And now that the contract for the gliders has run out, Tesla is back to the drawing board for the new second-gen Roadster. To be based on the same platform as that of the Model 3, Tesla has stated the new Roadster will be sleeker and faster than its predecessor, with the capable of reaching 60 mph coming up in 2.8 secs.
Meanwhile, Tesla has stated the Model S and Model X will be up for a redesign in 2020 and 2023 respectively. There can be mild refreshing done in between while the OTA would be streaming in at regular intervals.
