Nissan LEAF has set a new record on Sunday as the fastest car to travel a measured mile in reverse.

Terry Grant, a professional student driver, drove a Nissan LEAF up the Goodwood hillclimb course in England at the weekend's Festival of Speed. Having set the record on Friday, Grant broke his own record on Saturday and Sunday by 26 seconds. His best record was 1m 37.02s at an average speed of 55mph.

"I had a great car at my disposal - with direct drive from the electric motor to its wheels, the Nissan LEAF can, in theory, go as fast backwards as it can forwards," said Grant, who also set a world record last year, driving a Nissan Juke.

"There were times I wasn't sure I was coming or going. However, thanks to the LEAF's low center of gravity - the batteries are an integral part of the car's floor - the car is extremely stable, no matter which direction it's traveling. The only complaint I have is slight neck ache from constantly looking over my shoulder!" Grant added.

The reverse race was part of "The Big Turn On" campaign, which is promoting electric vehicle in Europe to have one million consumers in 100 days. The social media-driven campaign achieved its goal on June 21, 15 days ahead of the schedule.
